Central 70 Groundbreaking

The Challenge

As the largest transportation infrastructure project in Colorado’s history, the Central 70 Project has major significance, not only for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) but for the region as a whole. I-70 is the main artery that connects people and communities across Colorado. In the Denver-metro area, it is home to more than 1,200 businesses and moves 200,000 vehicles per day. Once completed, the Central 70 Project will improve safety, mobility and community connections along one of Colorado’s most congested interstate corridors.

After 15 years of meticulous planning to prepare for the Project, CIG knew a standard groundbreaking simply wouldn’t do to mark this milestone moment.

I-70 is the main artery that connects people and communities across Colorado.

Our Solution

CIG created a theme for the event, “The Heart of Colorado,” playing off the idea that I-70 is where everything connects, like the heart does in the body. The event theme manifested in a giant pile of sand laid out in the shape of a heart. Following a speaker ceremony, with the interchange of I-70 and I-270 as a backdrop, guests gathered around the sand heart and Project leaders and dignitaries were handed a shovel wrapped in pieces of the I-70 viaduct murals that had been created by local artists for ‘duct-work in 2016-2017. The speakers then broke ground with a ceremonial dig into the symbolic sand heart.

The CIG team worked every aspect of this event from start to finish, including all logistics, collateral, speakers and speaking points, developing a plan for potential protesters and securing the groundbreaking location. The event was held at the intersection of I-70 and I-270, offering a perfect view for the areas affected by the upcoming project.

The Results

More than 150 people, including residents, government administrators, partners, etc. attended the groundbreaking ceremony. The media coverage exceeded expectations with over 25 hits in local and regional news coverage.
