US 34 Big Thompson Canyon Closure

Monday, Oct. 19, marks the beginning of the US 34 closure between Estes Park and Loveland, with travel limited to only Big Thompson Canyon residents. CIG is on site for the first few days of the closure, helping check residents’ permits and providing information about the permanent road repairs that will occur to address the roadway devastated by the 2013 floods. Permitted residents will be allowed access to the canyon from 6 – 8:30 a.m. and 4 – 7 p.m., with the canyon closure expected to last through early June 2017.

Drivers heading westbound queue at the east gate. Working with Kiewit and Colorado State Patrol, CIG was there to provide information about upcomming work in the canyon and show those without a permit the detour to get to Estes Park

Canyon residents follow pilot cars either westbound or eastbound through the 3.5 miles long construction zone.

US 34 officially closes at 7 p.m. daily for all motorists, even canyon residents with permits. CIG will be back bright and early tomorrow morning to work the morning shift!
