Federal, state and local officials, and the project team gathered on May 10, 2016 to celebrate the Southeast Rail Extension Project groundbreaking. The event featured a formal groundbreaking with golden shovels, and a speaking program near the Sky Ridge Medical Center, where the future light rail will go through. The project will add 2.3 miles of light rail to the existing popular 19-mile southeast line, and will also add three new stations and 1,300 parking spaces. The light rail will be extended from Lincoln Avenue south to RidgeGate Parkway. Sure, it looks like an open field now, but check back in 2019, and it will look completely different!
